Lyda here. Like ya’ll didn’t know that from the title.
Ya’ll may remember that Yankee Doodle Boy, the latest member of my far-flung clan, joined us on the Fourth of July.
So, being the crazy woman and doting grand-aunt that I am, I immediately thought – BABY QUILT! And after this I’ll make a quilt for his toddler brother. But let’s cross that insanity when we come to it.
Right now I’m on a no-new-fabric diet, so I did some stash diving. Easier now that I organized my fabric. Heh. I said “stash diving.”
He shares his birthday with the USA. And he’s a Texan. I kept that in mind as I dug through the fabric.
And then I found the bandanas. Score! I had three bandanas in three different blues (one each in light, medium and dark blue, so perfect), and another in tan. And I had red fabric in a bandana-type print. So, mostly red, white and blue, with a cowboy-type tan.
Perfect!
I ironed them, cut off the rolled edges of the bandanas, and cut them up into two-inch squares. Yes. The insanity of the Teeny Tiny Squares continues. I also cut some of the red fabric into two-inch squares.
I had a lot of fun laying out the design of the quilt.
And I discovered something great.
Bandanas are awesome cut up into Teeny Tiny Squares. There were so many different patterns on these bandanas - large paisleys, tiny paisleys, stripes, dots, flowers, plain spaces… and randomly cutting them created endless combinations.
This quilt has variety and movement that would usually take a lot more fabrics to achieve.
Yee-haw! Welcome to the The Patriotic Cowboy Quilt!
I should watch John Wayne movies while I sew it, shouldn’t I?

Should I say anything … ? Naw, I’ll just grab some popcorn, sit back, and watch.
