Five ways to celebrate International Women’s Day with the Pollyannas:
* Be touched by this slideshow of pictures of women from around the world.
* Sign the pledge: One in three women will be raped, beaten or abused in her lifetime. “In some parts of the world a girl is more likely to be raped than learn how to read.”
One in three. Look around on the bus, on the elevator, in the office. Yes, those women. And men too – men get raped and abused, as children and as adults.
One in three. Maybe the questions are not “Were you ever abused? Were you ever raped?” Maybe the questions are “How old were you when you were first abused? How old were you when you were first raped?”
Let’s create a world where everyone – women, children, and men – are safe from rape and abuse. Stand up for human rights and dignity.
* Thank those who paved the way, and teach those who follow after us.
* And give a woman a hug.
“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights” Gloria Steinem
